A Hilo man is in custody after being charged with offenses in connection with a confrontation early Tuesday.

A Hilo man is in custody after being charged with offenses in connection with a confrontation early Tuesday.

Officers responded to a 2:50 a.m. report of an affray in progress on Mohouli Street in Hilo.

A 43-year-old man reported that he had been jumped by 6-7 males in the driveway of his home and punched and kicked repeatedly, causing him to fall to the ground, where he sustained injuries to his head, knees and feet. The assailants then fled the area on foot.

A few minutes later, police were able to locate the suspects hiding in the back of a church. They arrested three juvenile boys and two Hilo men, 19-year-old Grand Joseph and 20 -year-old Beliver Engilo.

The juveniles were released to the custody of their parents.

The men were taken to the Hilo Police cellblock while detectives continued to investigate.

At 8:59 a.m. Wednesday, detectives charged Engilo with second-degree assault. His bail was set at $10,000. He remains at the cellblock pending his initial court appearance scheduled for today.

He was also arrested on a bench warrant for a grand jury indictment on charges of kidnapping, terroristic threatening, unlawful imprisonment, endangering the welfare of a minor and two counts of abuse of a family/household member. His bail on those offenses was $17,000.

At 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, the other suspect, Joseph, was released pending further investigation.
